While we may be creatures of habit and routine, it’s worth stepping out of your comfort zone now and again. Doing something that pushes you beyond your comfort zone enhances personal growth, creates rewarding experiences, and keeps life from being boring.
Being uncomfortable could mean eating out by yourself or attending a social event where you don’t know anyone. For some, it may mean a new sport or hobby or traveling solo for the first time. For others, it could be singing karaoke or speaking in public. Whatever it is will depend on the individual since what is easy for one person could be nerve-wracking for another.
Over the years, I pushed beyond my comfort zone, like when I joined the drama club in high school, went to college out of state, joined Toastmasters (and competed in club contests), traveled solo, and learned to roller skate and ride a bicycle.
Most recently, I auditioned for a solo for an upcoming choir concert. I was nervous, and my voice was shaky, but I’m proud of myself for trying. Even though I didn’t get the solo, I am the backup soloist, and I’ll be better prepared for next time.
I also step outside my comfort zone in things I’m already involved in, like learning a new roller skating move or taking on a new project at work.
Not staying comfortable for too long helps you continue to grow and progress. You may experience joy, build confidence, or learn something like resilience and patience in the process that makes stepping out of your comfort zone worth it.
